Taoist Bagua Tortoiseshell Divination Piece

Trigrams run around a rounded shell-shaped form. The small round coins pictured beside it show a different, flat geometric motif.

Bagua refers to the eight trigrams. Look for arrangements of three-line signs; these are a different motif from the paired curves of a yin-yang disk.

The eight trigrams are arrangements of broken and unbroken lines. In a Taoist setting, the bagua can be chosen as a protective emblem for a household; the arrangement of the lines also gives the design its distinctive rhythm.

The faces and curves are part of how divination pieces are handled and read. Compare the precise form in the views; a crescent block and a tortoiseshell-shaped piece are not interchangeable simply because both belong to a divination collection.

The supplier lists brass for this design.
