Carved Figure Taoist Plaque with Blade Motif

A bearded figure holding a blade is carved in relief across this dark plaque. The robes, beard and surrounding details are defined by lighter raised areas and deeper shadows within the carving.

Sold individually.

Look first at the outline and relief of the carved figure plaque with blade motif. Its place in the Daojing collection reflects the use of ornament and inscription to carry a personal intention. Choose the particular design that speaks to the occasion, rather than assuming every motif has the same devotional use.

For display, decide which face you want to read from a little distance. Deep relief and narrow incised lines catch side light differently; leave room around the outline rather than pressing the face against another object.
