Taoist Carved Toad Figure on an Inscribed Base

The small carved figure rests on an irregular base with visible inscription marks. A dark eye and a raised ornament distinguish the upper part of the carving.

Sold individually.

Look first at the outline and relief of the carved toad figure on an inscribed base. Its place in the Daojing collection reflects the use of ornament and inscription to carry a personal intention. Choose the particular design that speaks to the occasion, rather than assuming every motif has the same devotional use.

For a shelf or altar, consider the object from your usual viewing height. Leave enough space around the outline for the carving to be seen. Display supports and neighboring objects in a photograph are not a reliable guide to its scale.
