Cloud Sword and Five Mountains Taoist Carving

Large relief marks form short rows across the dark face. The side view shows the depth of the carving beneath its irregular edge.

The Five Mountains motif identifies the design family. Read the other inscriptions as well: pieces with a similar front can have a different reverse.

Look first at the outline and relief of the cloud sword and five mountains carving. Its place in the Daojing collection reflects the use of ornament and inscription to carry a personal intention. Choose the particular design that speaks to the occasion, rather than assuming every motif has the same devotional use.

For a shelf or altar, consider the object from your usual viewing height. Leave enough space around the outline for the carving to be seen. Display supports and neighboring objects in a photograph are not a reliable guide to its scale.
