Dragon and Five Mountains Taoist Plaque

A densely carved dragon takes up one face. Several separate diagram-like motifs occupy the other.

Sold individually.

The Five Mountains motif identifies the design family. Read the other inscriptions as well: pieces with a similar front can have a different reverse.

Look first at the outline and relief of the dragon and five mountains plaque. Its place in the Daojing collection reflects the use of ornament and inscription to carry a personal intention. Choose the particular design that speaks to the occasion, rather than assuming every motif has the same devotional use.

For display, decide which face you want to read from a little distance. Deep relief and narrow incised lines catch side light differently; leave room around the outline rather than pressing the face against another object.
