Figural Relief Divination Taoist Blocks

Raised faces and curling motifs cover the rounded sides. The flatter sides carry groups of straight bars, visible when the pieces are turned.

Look first at the main motif of the figural relief divination blocks. Its place in the Daojing collection reflects the use of ornament and inscription to carry a personal intention. Choose the particular design that speaks to the occasion, rather than assuming every motif has the same devotional use.

The faces and curves are part of how divination pieces are handled and read. Compare the precise form in the views; a crescent block and a tortoiseshell-shaped piece are not interchangeable simply because both belong to a divination collection.
