Pierced Calligraphy Taoist Plaque

Open spaces follow the outlines of the raised characters on one face. The companion face has a simpler geometric pattern.

Look first at the outline and relief of the pierced calligraphy plaque. Its place in the Daojing collection reflects the use of ornament and inscription to carry a personal intention. Choose the particular design that speaks to the occasion, rather than assuming every motif has the same devotional use.

For display, decide which face you want to read from a little distance. Deep relief and narrow incised lines catch side light differently; leave room around the outline rather than pressing the face against another object.
