Taoist Pixiu and Basket-Motif Figure

A modeled creature sits within a low, sloping form. Side and underside views show the depth and the way the relief follows the base.

Sold individually.

Look first at the outline and relief of the pixiu and basket-motif figure. Its place in the Daojing collection reflects the use of ornament and inscription to carry a personal intention. Choose the particular design that speaks to the occasion, rather than assuming every motif has the same devotional use.

For a shelf or altar, consider the object from your usual viewing height. Leave enough space around the outline for the carving to be seen. Display supports and neighboring objects in a photograph are not a reliable guide to its scale.
