Tapered Cylindrical Taoist Carving with Engraved Figure

A figure and flowing motifs follow the curve of a tapered cylindrical form. The rim and lower lines are visible in the hand-held view, which shows the shape but does not establish a measurement.

Sold individually.

Look first at the outline and relief of the tapered cylindrical carving with engraved figure. Its place in the Daojing collection reflects the use of ornament and inscription to carry a personal intention. Choose the particular design that speaks to the occasion, rather than assuming every motif has the same devotional use.

For a shelf or altar, consider the object from your usual viewing height. Leave enough space around the outline for the carving to be seen. Display supports and neighboring objects in a photograph are not a reliable guide to its scale.
