Toad and Basket-Motif Taoist Carving

The low relief is shown from several angles, including its sloping sides and underside. The compact outline sets it apart from a flat inscribed plaque.

Look first at the outline and relief of the toad and basket-motif carving. Its place in the Daojing collection reflects the use of ornament and inscription to carry a personal intention. Choose the particular design that speaks to the occasion, rather than assuming every motif has the same devotional use.

For a shelf or altar, consider the object from your usual viewing height. Leave enough space around the outline for the carving to be seen. Display supports and neighboring objects in a photograph are not a reliable guide to its scale.
