Two-Tone Carved Portrait Taoist Plaque

A bearded figure in profile appears in relief on a rounded-corner plaque. Headgear, a flowing beard, a hand and folds of the robe stand out across the two-tone surface.

Sold individually.

Look first at the outline and relief of the two-tone carved portrait plaque. Its place in the Daojing collection reflects the use of ornament and inscription to carry a personal intention. Choose the particular design that speaks to the occasion, rather than assuming every motif has the same devotional use.

For display, decide which face you want to read from a little distance. Deep relief and narrow incised lines catch side light differently; leave room around the outline rather than pressing the face against another object.
