Ziwei Emperor Figure Taoist Plaque

A seated figure is framed by an arched crest and curved sides. The companion face carries larger seal-style strokes.

Look first at the outline and relief of the ziwei emperor figure plaque. Its place in the Daojing collection reflects the use of ornament and inscription to carry a personal intention. Choose the particular design that speaks to the occasion, rather than assuming every motif has the same devotional use.

For display, decide which face you want to read from a little distance. Deep relief and narrow incised lines catch side light differently; leave room around the outline rather than pressing the face against another object.
