Chinese Zodiac by Birth Date: New Year Boundary Guide

Your Chinese zodiac animal follows a year boundary, not simply the number printed on a Gregorian birth certificate. In the Lunar New Year convention used by our zodiac lookup, a January or early-February birthday can still belong to the preceding animal year. Check the complete date before choosing a sign from a twelve-year chart.
A person born on February 9, 2024 belongs to the Rabbit year in this convention; February 10 begins the Dragon year. Both birthdays fall in Gregorian 2024. This is why two people born only one day apart can receive different animal labels.

How to find your animal from a birth date
- Write the complete Gregorian date, including the year, month and day.
- Find Lunar New Year's date for that year, rather than using today's holiday date or a fixed February cutoff.
- If the birthday is before that date, use the preceding lunar year. On or after the date, use the new animal year.
- Read the result as a calendar classification. It does not measure personality, determine a partner or prescribe a gemstone.
Use the Chinese Zodiac Calculator for the date lookup. If you are comparing results with another system, first compare its year-boundary convention.

Recent Lunar New Year boundaries
| Gregorian year | Lunar New Year begins | Before that date | On or after that date |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2024 | February 10, 2024 | Rabbit | Dragon |
| 2025 | January 29, 2025 | Dragon | Snake |
| 2026 | February 17, 2026 | Snake | Horse |
| 2027 | February 6, 2027 | Horse | Goat |
These are the boundaries for the civil-date Lunar New Year lookup discussed here. A chart organized by Gregorian year needs this extra step for early birthdays; adding or subtracting twelve years alone does not resolve the boundary date.
Why Li Chun can give a different answer
Li Chun, or Start of Spring, is a solar term. It is not the same event as Lunar New Year. Some Chinese calendrical and divination methods change their year at Li Chun, while the popular birth-animal convention used above changes at Lunar New Year. Neither should be silently substituted for the other.
Our Kua Number Calculator uses a stated Li Chun method. Near that boundary, a birth time and the UTC offset that applied at birth can matter. The solar term is an instant, so its local calendar date can differ between places. It is not always February 4.
The twelve animals and the annual element
The animal sequence is Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig. Goat is also translated as Sheep or Ram. A recurring animal does not make every twelfth year identical: the stem-and-branch cycle also distinguishes the annual element and yin or yang stem.
For example, the annual label for the year beginning February 6, 2027 is Fire Goat, Ding Wei. That does not mean everyone experiences the same year, or that a Goat-born person needs a particular color of jewelry. A year label and a full personal BaZi interpretation answer different questions.
Use the result in the right context
Once you have the birth animal, the zodiac compatibility guide and calculator can show selected traditional relationships between two signs. Those tables name cultural categories; they do not produce a scientifically measured relationship score.
Guardian-figure associations are another layer, not part of the date calculation itself. Learn about their particular religious context before choosing an image. A correct animal label cannot establish an object's material, provenance or ceremony.
The Fortune Tools centre keeps the different methods together. If you also explore the Angel Number Calculator, treat its birthday-number method as a separate modern framework, not a conversion of the Chinese zodiac.
Birth-year questions
Does January 1 start a new Chinese zodiac animal?
Not in this guide's Lunar New Year method. An early-January birthday usually belongs to the preceding lunar animal year; use the actual New Year date for that year.
Should I use Lunar New Year or Li Chun?
Use the boundary required by the method you are consulting. This birth-animal guide uses Lunar New Year; our Kua tool uses Li Chun. Compare the conventions before comparing the results.
Does my animal change when a new annual year begins?
No. Your birth sign remains the label assigned to your birth date. The animal of a later calendar year describes that annual cycle, not a change to your birth sign.
