Kua Number: Method, Li Chun Boundary and Directions

A Kua number is a personal-trigram category used in the stated Eight Mansions approach to feng shui. Our calculator first assigns a solar year using Li Chun, then applies a traditional birth-sex formula branch. It returns a number, an East or West group and four directions from the table below. It is not the animal zodiac, a BaZi Day Master or a survey of your home's floor plan.

Use the Kua Number Calculator with the method's input requirements in mind. A clear boundary rule is more useful than assuming that every website called “Kua calculator” uses the same convention.

Why the Li Chun boundary matters

Li Chun is the solar term Start of Spring, associated with solar longitude 315 degrees. In this tool's convention, a birth before the relevant instant uses the preceding solar year; a birth on or after it uses the new year. Other Kua presentations use Lunar New Year. State the choice before comparing numbers.

The boundary is not always February 4. The pinned calendar used by this tool gives 2025 Li Chun as February 3 at 22:10:13 in UTC+08:00. A birthday near that instant needs the local birth time and the UTC offset that applied then, including any daylight-saving adjustment. The computer's current time zone is not a substitute.

If the date is the local boundary day and the birth time is missing, the calculator can show two year-based candidates rather than pretend the answer is certain. For dates away from that local boundary day, the date alone can establish which side of the boundary applies.

The full-year calculation used here

1. Assign the solar year using the boundary above.
2. Add all four digits of that year and repeatedly add the digits of the total until the result is 1–9.
3. For the traditional male formula, subtract that reduced total from 11, then reduce again. If the result is 5, use 2.
4. For the traditional female formula, add 4 to the reduced total, then reduce again. If the result is 5, use 8.

These are labels for the two traditional calculation branches, not an inference about your gender identity. The tool asks you to choose the branch rather than guessing it from a name or appearance. Using the complete year also avoids silently applying a last-two-digits shortcut across centuries.

For example, 1990 gives 1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 19, then 1 + 9 = 10, then 1. The male branch gives 11 − 1 = 10, reduced to 1; the female branch gives 4 + 1 = 5, mapped to 8. These examples concern the assigned year, not every Gregorian birthday within that year.

Groups and the four table directions

Kua 1, 3, 4 and 9 form the East group; 2, 6, 7 and 8 form the West group. In the table, SE means southeast, NE northeast, SW southwest and NW northwest. The columns retain the traditional order Sheng Qi, Tian Yi, Yan Nian and Fu Wei.

These are traditional labels, not evidence that a direction provides medical treatment, income or relationship success. A personal-trigram table is also not a complete house analysis: orientation, layout and the method being consulted are additional questions. Do not compromise safe access, ventilation or comfortable movement to fit furniture to a table.
