Celestial Script and Marshals Taoist Fan

Dark writing follows the outer rim of the pale leaf. Small red figures form a second band nearer the pivot.

Look first at the main motif of the celestial script and marshals fan. Its place in the Daojing collection reflects the use of ornament and inscription to carry a personal intention. Choose the particular design that speaks to the occasion, rather than assuming every motif has the same devotional use.

The shape is easiest to compare by looking at the outer edge and the design near the handle. Distinguish a fan-shaped display piece from a usable folding fan; the outline alone does not establish that the object opens.
