Agate

Agate is a variety of chalcedony, a fine-grained form of silica. It is especially associated with banding, although cutting direction and bead size can make the patterns appear very different across a finished piece. Bands may be sharply layered or softly blended, with translucent and opaque areas in the same bead. This patterned character makes agate useful for jewelry that rewards a closer look.

Choosing your piece

Check whether color is described as natural, dyed or otherwise treated. Trade names can describe an appearance rather than a specific origin. Match the pattern, bead diameter and wrist fit to your preference.

Care notes

Avoid impacts around drill holes and prolonged exposure to chemicals or strong sunlight, particularly for dyed material. Clean gently and dry the cord and fittings fully.
