Cat's eye describes a narrow moving band of light called chatoyancy; it is not enough, on its own, to identify a gemstone. The effect can occur in different minerals and manufactured glass. A well-oriented rounded surface reveals a bright stripe that travels as the viewing angle changes. Color, transparency and the sharpness of the stripe vary with the underlying material.
Choosing your piece
Ask which material is being described: chrysoberyl, quartz, glass or another substance. Do not assume a cat's-eye label means chrysoberyl or a rare natural gemstone. The individual product description takes priority.
Care notes
Use conservative care until the material is known: a soft cloth, no ultrasonic or steam treatment, and protection from impact and chemicals. Cleaning advice depends on the actual substance.
