Its characteristic moving sheen, called adularescence, results from light interacting with fine layers inside the material, rather than a light source within the stone. The sheen may be subtle or prominent and changes with viewing angle. Jewelry sold as rainbow moonstone is commonly a different feldspar, so trade names need careful reading.
Choosing your piece
Look at multiple angles and the actual material description. Consider surface condition and setting protection as well as the flash; a single strongly lit image may not reflect everyday appearance.
Care notes
Feldspar can cleave after a hard knock. Avoid impact, ultrasonic cleaning and sudden temperature changes. Wipe gently and keep separate from harder stones.
