Obsidian is natural volcanic glass, formed when silica-rich lava cools too quickly to develop a visible crystal structure. Its deep color and glassy polish create a very different presence from a translucent gemstone. Most pieces appear black, but some show gray bands or a sheen under directional light. A smooth bead can look almost opaque until its curved surface catches a narrow reflection.
Choosing your piece
Compare bead diameter, overall weight and the finish around each drill hole. Named sheen varieties should be described in the individual listing; a photograph alone cannot establish their identity.
Care notes
Glass can chip after a sharp impact. Keep obsidian separate from harder jewelry, avoid sudden temperature changes, and clean gently with a soft damp cloth before drying.
