Quartz is a crystalline form of silica. The wider family includes clear rock crystal and colored varieties such as amethyst, citrine and rose quartz; crystal is also used more loosely in jewelry descriptions. Quartz can be transparent, cloudy or included. Fine internal veils and inclusions affect the way light moves through a bead and should be assessed in the photographs of the individual piece.
Choosing your piece
Look for a precise material name and any disclosed treatment. Clear appearance is not proof of natural origin, and a general crystal label does not distinguish natural quartz from glass or other materials.
Care notes
Avoid sharp temperature changes, knocks and prolonged strong sunlight for color-sensitive varieties. A soft cloth and cautious cleaning protect both the stone and its stringing.
