Sterling silver

Sterling silver is an alloy containing 92.5% silver, with other metals added for working strength. A 925 description is a material claim; the appearance of a white metal alone cannot establish its fineness. Silver can be brightly polished, brushed or intentionally oxidized to emphasize details. Darkening over time is often tarnish, but decorative patinas may be part of the intended finish.

Choosing your piece

Distinguish solid sterling components from silver-plated or merely silver-colored ones. Read which parts of a mixed-material piece are identified as sterling, and check construction, dimensions and any assay information supplied.

Care notes

Use a suitable soft polishing cloth only where the finish allows it. Avoid chlorine and abrasive cleaning. Do not remove intentional oxidation or immerse mixed-material pieces in a silver-dip solution without guidance.
